How a parcel travels — and why to test it
Before your box reaches the customer’s hands, it goes through a journey you never see. It lands on the sorting-line belt, rolls off rollers, gets thrown onto a stack of other parcels, travels several hundred kilometres in a vibrating trailer and for part of the way is pressed under the weight of parcels stacked on top of it. A strength test is a controlled simulation of that “journey” — a check, under repeatable conditions, of whether the construction will withstand what it actually meets.
For an online shop this isn’t a curiosity but a calculation: a damaged parcel means a return, a complaint, a second shipment and a scratched reputation. That’s why choosing packaging starts with the question “what is it carrying and by what route”, not with looks alone.
Three transport tests that matter most
In industry practice, transport packaging is assessed with several repeatable trials. Three of them say the most about whether a parcel will arrive intact:
- Drop test — the box is dropped from a set height onto its corners, edges and walls. This is the harshest trial, because most damage in courier transport comes precisely from falls; it checks whether the corners and glued seams survive the impact and the contents don’t punch through the wall.
- Compression / BCT — measures how many kilograms of pressure a box set in a stack withstands before it starts to crush. It’s a key parameter for palletisation and warehousing, where the whole column above presses down on the bottom cartons.
- Transport vibration — the box is shaken on a vibration table, simulating hours of driving by truck. This trial catches what isn’t visible at once: loosened flaps, print rubbing away and contents that “shift” out of place and get damaged from the inside.

The starting point is the material: ECT and flute type
No drop test will fix badly chosen board. That’s why strength starts not with the finished box but with the material. The most commonly used indicator is ECT (the corrugated board’s resistance to edge crush) — it tells you how strongly the board resists compression, and that largely translates later into the BCT result. The second factor is the flute type: different flute heights and densities give different stiffness, cushioning and wall thickness.
When choosing the material, you look at several things at once:
- Product weight and shape — the heavier and more “point-loaded” the contents, the stronger the board and the higher the ECT needed.
- Storage method — if parcels travel and sit in stacks, compression resistance matters, which again comes down to flute and grammage.
- Flute type — a thinner flute gives a smoother box for print, a thicker one cushions impacts better.

Standards like ISTA — why know them at all
In e-commerce there are ready-made test sequences — the most commonly mentioned is the ISTA series, i.e. standardised scenarios combining drops, compression and vibration into one repeatable run. Their point is simple: instead of everyone testing “their own way”, the whole industry measures a parcel in a comparable way, and large buyers can require a specific scenario to be passed.
For most buyers these standards are a point of reference and a common language, not an obligation. You don’t need a certificate or a lab to pack a product well — it’s enough to understand what these tests protect against and translate that into material and construction.
What you actually do as the buyer
The good news: you don’t need a vibration table or a compression press. Your job is to match the packaging to the product’s weight and the shipping method, and verify the rest in practice. In short:
- Choose board and construction for the load — a heavier or delicate product means a stronger flute, a stiffer style and a well-thought-out closure so the parcel doesn’t open on the way.
- Secure the contents inside — filling, dividers or a fitted style limit the product’s movement; for goods sensitive to moisture or grease it’s worth thinking about a suitable barrier inside the packaging too.
- Test a trial batch in a real shipment — for unusually heavy or fragile products, the most honest test is simply to send a few units by courier and see what arrives.
