A grease stain seeping through the bottom of a box can ruin more than the look — it undermines the whole impression of quality the kitchen and the brand have worked for. Paper and cardboard are excellent packaging materials: light, rigid, easy to print on and recyclable. They have one natural weakness, though — they absorb. That’s why, with food, the key technical topic is the moisture and grease barrier: a layer or material property that keeps the packaging from soaking through, leaking or losing its shape. Below we explain when a barrier is really needed, what types there are and how to match it to a specific product — without overpaying for protection you don’t need.

Why paper needs a barrier

Barriers and recycling — the PPWR context

Until recently, the standard answer to moisture and grease was PE film laminated onto cardboard. The problem is that such a combination makes recycling harder — and that’s exactly why the market and regulations (with PPWR at the forefront) are pushing the industry towards dispersion coatings and barrier papers that keep the mono-material character. For the buyer the takeaway is practical: if you’re designing packaging for years to come, choose a barrier that doesn’t close off the path to recycling — you’ll do it once instead of reworking the design after the requirements tighten.

Frequently asked questions

Does every food packaging need a barrier?
No. Dry products usually don’t require one — a food-safe material is enough. A barrier becomes necessary with grease, moisture and hot dishes.

Is packaging with a barrier recyclable?
It depends on the type of barrier. Greaseproof papers and modern dispersion coatings usually stay recyclable; classic film laminates — much less often. Tell us this matters to you and we’ll pick the right variant.

Which is better: a stronger barrier “in reserve” or a matched one?
A matched one. Too strong a barrier is an unnecessary cost, and with baked goods it can actually make the product worse (no breathing). It’s chosen for the specific product and contact time.

How will you check that the barrier will work for my product?

Is logo printing possible on barrier materials?
Yes — the barrier usually concerns the inside of the packaging, and printing on the outer side works just like on standard cardboard. We prepare the design and print at no extra cost.
