Types of Cardboard Packaging — A Complete Guide to the Options

Slotted, tuck-end, drawer, lid–and–base, laminated, FEFCO 0201… The first time you order packaging, the construction names can be overwhelming. Yet underneath them lies a simple truth: most are variations on a few basic ideas, and the choice comes down to two questions — what are you packing, and how should it look once opened.

This guide organises the types of cardboard packaging so that, once you’ve read it, you’ll know what you actually need and how to explain it to a manufacturer. No jargon for the sake of it — from the material, through construction types, to a tip on what to choose for a specific industry.

First the material: cardboard or corrugated board

Before we get down to shapes, it’s worth distinguishing two worlds, because they determine strength and appearance:

  • Cardboard (solid). Smooth, uniform, ideal for print and small to medium products — boxes for pastries, cosmetics, supplements, sushi. This is where a logo looks its best.
  • Corrugated board. Cardboard with a “flute” inside — lighter and stronger where protection in transport matters. Hence its home: shipping boxes and bulk packaging.

A separate, common choice is kraft paper versus white cardboard — natural, “craft” brown or clean, premium white. We’ve broken it down here: kraft paper or white cardboard.

Main construction types

There’s no single “best” box — there’s the best one for your product. Here are the most commonly seen constructions and what they suit:

Construction type Works for Character
Slotted box (FEFCO type) Shipping, bulk packaging, e-commerce Quick assembly, good protection, economical
Tuck-end box (folding) Food service, patisseries, small retail Folds from a single blank, clean look for print
Lid–and–base (two-part) Premium sets, B2B gifts Rigid, “gift-like”, high perceived value
Drawer box Premium lines, slide-in products Striking to open, elegant
With a window Patisseries, gifts, “show-off” product Shows the contents without opening
Laminated Premium, strong brands A luxury effect plus extra strength
Self-assembling E-commerce, frequent packing Glue-free assembly, time saving
Paper bags Bundling an order, retail, food to go Wearable branding the customer touches first

Premium constructions — drawer and lid–and–base — and classic tuck-end boxes have their own categories with us. You’ll find a full overview of boxes in cardboard boxes, and bags here: paper bags.

Which type for which industry

In practice the choice of construction almost always follows from the industry and the product. The most common matches:

Print and finishing — the common denominator

Whatever the type, packaging only starts working for the brand once it’s printed. A logo alone, full colour coverage, and — in premium versions — finishes like varnish, embossing or lamination. We’ve gathered the whole topic of branded packaging here: printed packaging. And if an eco profile matters to you, start with eco-friendly packaging.

Where to start your choice

You don’t need to know the construction name to order. It’s enough that you know: what you’re packing, in what approximate dimensions and how many pieces. The rest — type, material, grammage — we’ll pick together. Three things worth thinking through in advance:

  • Product dimensions — either exact or approximate; we’ll fit the construction.
  • Run size — we produce from 500 pieces; why that’s a sensible threshold we explain in the article on MOQ.
  • Budget per piece — what moves the price we break down in the article how much packaging with a logo costs.

You’ll get a sense of the costs fastest by entering the dimensions into the calculator — a 3D box preview will show the proportions right away:

Frequently asked questions

I don’t know which type to choose — will you help?
Yes, that’s our everyday work. Tell us what you’re packing and how you want it to look once opened — we’ll pick the construction and the material.

Cardboard or corrugated board?
Solid cardboard for a product on the shelf and strong print; corrugated board where protection in shipping matters. Often both are combined within a single brand.

Do you make to size or do you have ready formats?
We fit the construction to your product. If you don’t know the exact sizes, give us approximate ones — we’ll settle the rest based on the 3D preview.

What is the minimum run?
500 pieces — enough to enter with your own packaging without large quantities at the start.
