Paperboard weight — how mass affects stiffness and cost
When ordering packaging, sooner or later you run into the cryptic abbreviation “g/m²” and the question of which paperboard weight to choose. It’s one of the most important parameters of a material — it indirectly determines how stiff the packaging will be, how well it protects the product, how solid it feels in the customer’s hand and how much you actually pay. The trouble is that a lot of misunderstanding has grown around board weight: it gets confused with thickness and stiffness, and rough ranges are treated as a rigid standard. Below we explain what board weight really means, what it affects and how to match it to your product — so you neither overpay for excess nor cut corners where the packaging is meant to protect.
What paperboard weight is
Board weight is simply the mass of paper or board per square metre, expressed in grams — hence the notation g/m² (GSM in English). A 300 g/m² board weighs 300 grams for every square metre of sheet. It’s a figure that tells you how much a material “weighs” and indirectly reveals how solid it is — heavier material usually means thicker and stiffer. The key word is “indirectly”: board weight describes mass, not thickness directly, and it’s from that misunderstanding that most ordering mistakes arise.
Weight, thickness and stiffness — not the same thing
The most common mistake goes: “the higher the weight, the thicker and stiffer the board.” That’s only true within the same type of material. Board weight tells you about mass, not directly about thickness or stiffness — two different structures with the same weight can have completely different thickness and behaviour. A 350 g/m² solid board will be thin and very stiff, while lightweight corrugated board of similar mass will be much thicker, because the air between the layers “inflates” the volume without adding weight. That’s why board weight is always read together with the type of material, not in isolation.

What board weight really affects
Choosing a board weight isn’t a technical detail but a decision that translates into several concrete things at once:
- Stiffness and protection — heavier board holds its shape better, doesn’t bend under the weight of the product and protects the contents more effectively in transit. Material that’s too light simply bulges and “waves.”
- Sense of quality — solid packaging with heft in the hand is perceived as more expensive and more refined. Thin, flimsy board instantly lowers the perceived value of the product.
- Cost — a higher weight means more raw material per unit, and so a higher material price. On top of that, heavier packaging increases the weight of the parcel, which genuinely raises shipping costs at larger quantities.
- Print and finishing — thicker, stiffer board is a better base for finishing such as embossing or spot varnish; on material that’s too thin, some effects simply don’t look good.
Heavier material and the premium impression
It’s worth pausing on one aspect, because it tends to be underrated. The weight of packaging is a quality signal the customer picks up subconsciously, before they even open the box. Solid board that holds its shape well says “this is valuable” without a single word. That’s why premium brands, cosmetics and gift sets reach for higher weights and rigid constructions — not because the product needs it structurally, but because the packaging is meant to shape perception. On the other hand, for simple logistics uses that same weight can be a waste. The art lies in matching, not in maximising.

How to match the weight to your product
Choosing a board weight is a search for balance between protection and cost. You can overdo it in either direction:
- Weight too high — the packaging is stiffer than it needs to be, but you overpay for material and add weight, and with it shipping cost. Excess stiffness no longer buys you anything worth paying for.
- Weight too low — you save on material, but the packaging bends, waves and protects poorly. A damaged product or a cheap impression cost far more than the pennies you saved.
- Matched to the product — the weight is matched to the weight and size of the contents, the mode of transport and the effect the packaging is meant to create. A heavy product and courier shipping call for more than a light gadget collected in person.
