As a rule of thumb, NFC works well in the premium segment and for authentication: a tap can confirm that a product is genuine, unlock content for buyers or lead to warranty registration. It’s a campaign tool, strong in storytelling and at launches.
AR works best where you care about emotion and reach: a well-designed effect encourages people to record and post a video, so the packaging drives social media content by itself. It’s a natural extension of the unboxing experience — the moment of unpacking moves from the box to the internet. Cost and complexity are the highest of the four here, so reserve AR for specific campaigns rather than every product in the catalogue.
Variable data printing — a unique code on every unit
The fourth technology works differently: it’s not about a chip or an animation, but about the fact that every unit gets its own, unique print — a different code, batch number or QR.
