Eco-friendly packaging for business — materials and regulations
Eco-friendly packaging is today one of the most common requirements that companies place on their supplier — and at the same time one of the most overused buzzwords in the entire industry. A customer reads “eco” on a box and feels they are doing the right thing; a brand writes “eco” in the brief but doesn’t always know exactly what it means by it. This guide sorts the topic out from a business perspective: what eco-friendly packaging really means, where greenwashing begins, which materials and certificates actually make a difference, and how the upcoming regulations will affect what you order in 2026. No ideology — concretely, geared toward the purchasing decision.
What eco-friendly packaging really means — and what greenwashing is
There is no single definition of the word “eco”, which is why everyone attaches to it whatever suits them. In practice, eco-friendly packaging is assessed by several measurable features, not by its looks alone or by a green leaf on the print:
- Material from a renewable or recycled raw source — paper and cardboard instead of fossil-based plastics.
- A real possibility of recovery — whether the packaging can be sent for recycling within a typical, household waste stream, or whether it requires a specialised facility.
- Mono-materiality — whether it is a single raw material (paper alone) or a hard-to-separate mix of paper with plastic and film.
- Less material overall — the most “eco” packaging is the one that isn’t there: a sensibly chosen structure and grammage, without excess layers.
Greenwashing begins where the message runs ahead of the facts. Brown kraft in itself does not make packaging eco-friendly — white cardboard is also a recyclable paper, which we write about in the article kraft cardboard or white. On the other hand, a box with a thick layer of laminate and a film window can look “natural” while in practice being hard to separate into fractions. If a brand declares that it is eco-friendly, it has to be able to justify it with the material and the process, not just with aesthetics.
Materials — paper, cardboard, mono-material versus laminates
The most important decision is made at the raw-material level. From the recovery standpoint, a simple rule applies: the fewer layers and the less plastic, the easier the packaging returns to circulation. Paper and cardboard — kraft and white — are a mono-material made of cellulose and both are recyclable. The problem appears when plastic that the consumer cannot separate is permanently bonded to the paper.

For most dry products and those packed “rigidly”, a paper box without laminate is fully sufficient. Where grease resistance is needed — food service, bakeries, confectionery — the solution is often greaseproof paper instead of plastic film. It is also worth remembering that ecology is not only about the raw material, but also about compostability: some paper materials break down under industrial composting conditions, which for some brands is an additional argument. Certificates — FSC, recycling, compostability and how to ask about them
Certificates exist so that the “eco” claim has substance beyond the word. You don’t need to know them by heart — it is enough that you know what to ask the supplier about. Here are three groups that you will realistically come across:
- FSC (and similar forestry systems) — they confirm that the wood-based raw material comes from responsibly managed forests. This is an argument about the origin of the paper, not about its recycling. It is worth asking the supplier whether a given paper is available in a version with such a certificate.
- Recycled material content — information on what percentage of the raw material comes from recovery. The higher the share of recovered paper, the smaller the footprint of virgin material, though print quality has to be watched.
- Compostability — markings that say whether the material breaks down in industrial composting, or in home composting as well. This is important especially for single-use packaging in food service.
Instead of asking generally “is this eco”, ask concrete questions: what paper the packaging is made of, whether the raw material is available with an origin certificate, whether the structure is mono-material, whether it can be sent for recycling within a household stream. A good supplier will answer each of them directly — and it is precisely by the quality of these answers, not by the marketing, that you will tell whether the “eco” is real. It is also worth remembering honesty in the other direction: if a given material does not have a certain certificate, it is better not to suggest it on the packaging, because a false environmental claim is today a real legal and reputational risk.
The regulatory context — PPWR 2026 in a nutshell
Packaging ecology is ceasing to be solely a matter of image and is becoming a matter of legal compliance. PPWR is the upcoming EU regulation on packaging and packaging waste, which gradually tightens requirements regarding, among other things, excess material, recyclability and the reduction of unnecessary plastics. For companies this means one practical conclusion: heading toward paper materials, mono-material and less plastic is not a passing trend, but compliance with where the regulations are going.

How eco affects your brand and customers’ decisions
Packaging is the customer’s first physical contact with the brand — and one of the cheapest carriers of its values. Choosing an ecological material works on the business on several levels at once:
- Message consistency. A brand that talks about quality and responsibility but packs the product in excess plastic loses credibility. Paper, mono-material packaging closes that narrative.
- The purchasing decision. A growing group of customers — and of buyers in retail — genuinely looks at the packaging material. For some of them it is the deciding factor between two similar products on the shelf.
- Future-proofing. A brand that already packs “to the regulations” today will not have to hastily redesign its packaging when requirements tighten.
- Less, but better. Eco often also means less material — and that translates directly into cost and logistics, not just image.
It is worth avoiding a trap here: ecology has to be justified, not merely declared. It works best when the material, the structure and the message all say the same thing — and when, if asked, you can show exactly what the “eco” in your packaging consists of.
Eco-friendly packaging — for which industries it is the strongest argument
Eco-friendly packaging works everywhere, but in a few segments it is practically an expected standard and genuinely affects sales:
- Food service and takeaway food. Here eco is most visible to the end customer, and at the same time regulatory changes reach it the fastest. Paper boxes and bags instead of plastic are today almost a requirement — we develop this in packaging for food service.
- Dietary supplements. The “health” category particularly suffers from inconsistency — a health-oriented product in excess plastic looks fake. A paper box builds trust; more in the section packaging for supplements.
- Cosmetics. An industry in which “clean” and “eco” are part of the brand’s positioning. A mono-material box and reduced plastic are a natural extension of the product’s promise.
This does not mean that eco does not count in other industries — it is simply that in these three it is a sales argument, not just an add-on. In every case the starting point remains the same set of decisions: paper instead of plastic, mono-material instead of laminate, material with a documented origin.
Eco-friendly packaging and cost — does eco have to be more expensive
This question comes up almost always and rests on a misunderstanding. Paper and cardboard are not a “surcharge for ecology” — they are the standard base materials from which most made-to-order packaging is created anyway. The price is determined above all by grammage, structure, print run and printing, not by whether we call the project “eco”. In many cases the ecological approach actually lowers the cost, because it leads to simpler decisions.
- Less material. Doing away with excess layers, inserts and laminates means less raw material per unit — a lower cost and lighter shipping.
- Mono-material instead of hybrids. A single raw material is often simpler to produce than combining paper with film or plastic.
- The print run makes a difference. Regardless of the material, the larger the batch, the lower the price per unit — because the setup costs are spread over more copies.
Real surcharges appear only with finishes (special finishing, additional certified papers), not with the choice of a paper material itself. In other words: eco is not a synonym for “more expensive” — more often it is a synonym for “less, but more sensibly”.
Where to start — a short checklist
If you are to make a decision, not just read about it, go through these points:
- Define the function. What does the packaging really have to withstand — contact with grease, moisture, transport? Only then choose the material, not the other way around.
- Choose mono-material if you can. Paper or cardboard alone is the easiest to recover; leave laminates for situations in which they are truly necessary.
- Ask about origin and recycling. What paper it is made of, whether it is available with an origin certificate, whether it can be sent to the household stream.
- Don’t declare more than you have. An “eco” message on packaging has to be backed by the material — otherwise it is a risk, not an asset.
- Look ahead. Arrange material decisions so that they align with the direction of the regulations, not against it.
Frequently asked questions
Is kraft more eco-friendly than white cardboard?
Not by definition. Both are recyclable paper — kraft simply looks “raw”. Ecology is determined by the material, the structure and the absence of unnecessary laminates, not by the colour of the paper.

Can paper packaging always be sent for recycling?
