The small green tree with the FSC label is showing up on more and more boxes, bags and cartons. For some customers it’s just another icon. For others — especially in B2B, retail chains and tenders — it’s a concrete signal: the material in this packaging comes from responsible sources, and that can be proven. In this article we take the FSC certificate apart piece by piece: what it means, how its three variants differ, what it really gives your brand and how to approach the subject when you’re ordering branded packaging.
What the FSC certificate is
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international non-profit organisation that certifies responsible forest management. In practice the system works on two levels:
- Forest certification — a forest managed to FSC standards: no predatory logging, with respect for nature and the rights of local communities.
- Chain of Custody — every company on the way from the forest to the finished box (paper mill, printing house, packaging manufacturer) must hold its own certificate for the end product to carry the FSC label. It’s a closed chain: one undocumented link and the label may not be used.
That’s why the FSC logo on packaging isn’t a marketing claim but the result of an audited system — and that’s exactly where its credibility comes from.
FSC 100%, FSC Recycled, FSC Mix — how they differ
The FSC label comes in three variants, and it’s worth knowing what each one means:
| Label | What it means | Where you’ll see it |
|---|---|---|
| FSC 100% | All fibres come from FSC-certified forests | The rarest; premium products with an unambiguous eco message |
| FSC Recycled | Material made entirely from recycled fibre (recovered paper) | Packaging with a closed-loop message |
| FSC Mix | A blend of certified, recycled and controlled fibres | The most common variant on the packaging market |
For most brands FSC Mix is perfectly sufficient — it’s the market standard that balances material availability with credible sourcing. FSC 100% and Recycled are chosen when a specific message (“fully certified” or “fully recycled”) is part of the brand strategy.
What the FSC certificate gives your brand
Looking through the eyes of a B2B buyer, the benefits are quite tangible:
- Credibility instead of empty claims. Anyone can write “eco”; the FSC label requires a documented supply chain. At a time when customers are getting sharper at spotting greenwashing, that’s a different class of proof.
- Retail chain and tender requirements. Some retail chains, corporations and public tenders explicitly require certified materials. Missing FSC can rule your offer out before anyone even looks at the price.
- ESG reporting. If your company reports its environmental impact, certified packaging is a concrete, countable point in the report — not a vague generality.
- Consistency with the rest of your eco efforts. Paper-based, recyclable packaging with a certificate rounds off the story you’re telling anyway — from the material to the mark on the bottom of the box. We break this down more broadly in our guide to eco-friendly packaging for business.
The FSC certificate and regulations — the PPWR context
The FSC certificate itself isn’t a legal requirement — it’s a voluntary system. But the direction of EU regulation, with PPWR at the forefront, consistently rewards packaging with documented, responsible sourcing and high recyclability. Brands that put their supply chain in order and choose credible materials today will simply have less catching up to do when the requirements tighten.
Does your packaging have to carry FSC?
The honest answer: not always. The certificate makes sense when:
- your buyer requires it (a retail chain, a tender, a corporate client),
- the eco message is a real part of your brand positioning,
- you report ESG and need hard anchor points.
If none of these apply, simply choosing the right material can be just as good an investment (and sometimes a better one): cardboard with high recycled content, a mono-material without unnecessary films, a construction designed without excess raw material. What counts is what actually happens to the packaging after use — the mark on the bottom is the crowning touch, not a substitute.
How to order packaging when the certificate matters
A few practical rules that save a lot of nerves:
- State the requirement at the start of your enquiry. Certified material and permission to use the label have to be factored in before the quote and the design, not after the fact. We’ll match the material to your requirement and tell you honestly what’s possible at a given print run.
- Remember the logo usage rules. Only a certified supply chain may use the FSC label on a product, following strict labelling rules — it’s not a graphic you simply drop into the design.
- Verify, don’t assume. Every certificate has a licence number (FSC-C…) that can be checked in the public FSC database. A reliable supplier will share it without hesitation.
- Ask about the variant. FSC Mix, Recycled and 100% carry different messages and differ in material availability — consciously choose the one that fits your story. We’ve gathered the criteria for choosing a supplier in our article on how to choose a packaging manufacturer.
Frequently asked questions
Is the FSC certificate mandatory for packaging?
No — it’s a voluntary system. In practice it can become mandatory: when a retail chain, a tender or a corporate client requires it. In that case, flag the requirement at the enquiry stage.
How does FSC Mix differ from FSC 100%?
FSC Mix is a blend of certified, recycled and controlled-source fibres — the market standard. FSC 100% means all the fibres come from certified forests; it’s a rarer variant with a stronger message.
Does every eco packaging carry an FSC certificate?
No. Packaging can be fully paper-based and perfectly recyclable without carrying the FSC label. The certificate documents the origin of the fibres — a different dimension from recyclability itself.
Who can put the FSC logo on packaging?
Only a product made within a certified supply chain (Chain of Custody), in line with FSC labelling rules. The licence number can be verified in the public FSC database.
Is certified packaging much more expensive?
The difference depends on the material, the certificate variant and the print run — it can be small, but it isn’t zero. That’s why it’s best to compare a quote with and without the certificate, with specific dimensions and quantities in hand.
