Here the conditions are defined, and for industrial composting they’re described by the EN 13432 standard — the material has to break down within a set time under industrial composting conditions (high temperature, humidity, a controlled process). It’s a real, verifiable property, but it has its catches:
- Industrial vs home — “industrially compostable” doesn’t mean “it’ll break down on your balcony”. Home composting has different, milder conditions, and not every such material can cope with them.
- The right facility is needed — compostable packaging only works if it reaches the right waste stream. Thrown into an ordinary bin or the paper recycling, it won’t do its job.
- It doesn’t always suit recycling — compostable material tossed in with paper can be a contaminant for recycling, not a plus.

- High recovered-paper content — recovered paper closes the loop and genuinely reduces the footprint, instead of just sounding ecological.
- Certificates and the direction of the law — confirming the origin of the raw material gives solid ground for your messaging, and regulations set the direction the market is heading anyway.
Treat this approach as a direction, not legal advice — the specific requirements depend on the product and the regulations. But the principle holds: choose a material with a real loop and talk about it in specifics. An honest “our cardboard recycles well” is stronger than a vague “100% eco”.
