Parchment paper — properties and uses in packaging
Parchment came back into favour faster than anyone expected. Not long ago it was mostly associated with baking sheets, and today it is increasingly used to wrap burgers, sandwiches, bread and deli treats — and with the venue’s logo, too. It has exactly what brands are looking for today: a natural, “artisan” look, plus specific functional properties that plastic doesn’t give away for free.
It is one of the materials people ask us about most often right now. In this post we explain what parchment paper actually is, what real properties it has, where it works best and how to turn it into a brand carrier rather than just a liner.
What parchment paper is
Parchment is a paper with a smooth, dense structure created through a special treatment of the paper pulp. The result is a material resistant to grease and moisture which — unlike ordinary paper — does not fall apart on contact with a moist or greasy product. Hence its natural environment: food service and bakeries, where the paper is in constant contact with food.
It is worth distinguishing two terms that often get confused in conversation:
- Parchment paper (true parchment) — denser and more durable, holding its shape well even when damp.
- Grease-resistant paper — lighter, cheaper, great for wrapping and liners when you don’t need quite that much strength.
Which one is better depends on the product — and we settle that at the outset, before anything goes to print.
Properties — why brands reach for it
Parchment’s popularity is not just a trend. It is backed by concrete features:
- Grease resistance. It doesn’t soak through from greasy products and doesn’t leave stains on the bag or on the customer’s hands.
- Moisture resistance. It holds its shape with warm, steaming food and doesn’t go soft as quickly as ordinary paper.
- Food contact. In the food-safe version it is suitable for packing food directly — that is its primary use.
- Natural look. The matte, “artisan” texture builds an impression of freshness and quality — especially in the kraft version.
- Eco message. Paper instead of plastic is a real argument today when choosing a venue, not just a declaration.
Uses — where parchment works best
It most often ends up where food comes into direct contact with the paper:
| Industry | Typical use | What parchment provides |
|---|---|---|
| Food service / street food | Wrapping burgers, sandwiches, wraps; liners for baskets and boxes | Holds grease and moisture, nicely rounds off the dish presentation |
| Bakery | Wrapping bread, lining baskets and bags | Freshness plus a natural, “homemade” look |
| Confectionery | Dividers between pastries, box liners, single portions | Protects delicate products and keeps the contents in order |
| Delicatessen / cheeses / cold cuts | Wrapping and packing at the counter | A breathable, food-safe material and an attractive presentation |
Very often parchment is part of a larger whole: a liner or a wrap on the inside, and on the outside a paper bag or a box with the same logo. Then the whole thing looks like a thought-through brand, not a jumble of random elements.
Printed parchment — from liner to brand carrier
The most interesting part begins when parchment stops being a neutral paper and becomes an element of identity. A wrap with a repeating logo, a simple pattern or the venue’s slogan costs little, yet makes a considerable difference: the customer unpacks the food and immediately sees the brand — at home, in the office, in a photo on social media. It is one of the cheaper ways to bring branding to every order, not just the outer packaging.
Printing on parchment has its own specifics — it behaves differently on a grease-resistant surface than on ordinary paper. That is why we set the design and choice of print for the specific material, so the logo is crisp rather than faint.
Is parchment eco-friendly
This question comes up almost every time — and rightly so, because “paper” does not automatically mean “fully eco”. Parchment is a paper, so in principle it fits into moving away from plastic, but its specific status depends on the type and any coatings. If you care about packaging with a clear environmental profile, we will select a variant to match that goal — more in eco-friendly packaging.
Design, print and run
We deliver the design and print at no extra cost, and we produce from 500 pieces. Before production starts, you get a visualisation to approve — you see how the logo will behave on parchment before anything goes on the machine. It’s a solution for a single food truck just building its brand, and for a venue that wants the same standard of wraps at every location.
How much printed parchment costs — what moves the price
The cost depends on several things at once, which is why the fairest way is to calculate it for a specific use. The price is driven above all by:
- Format and grammage — a larger sheet and stronger parchment mean more material.
- Run — with a larger number of pieces the unit price drops noticeably.
- Print — a logo alone is a different cost than a full, repeating pattern across the whole surface.
- Type of paper — true parchment and lighter grease-resistant paper are different items.

Frequently asked questions
Is parchment suitable for contact with food?
Yes — the food-safe version is made precisely for packing food directly. We select the material for the specific use.
Will a logo on parchment be crisp?
Yes, provided the print is matched to the grease-resistant surface — that is why we set the design for this specific material and show a visualisation before production.
Parchment or grease-resistant paper — which to choose?
It depends on the product. For greasy and moist dishes a stronger parchment is often better; for light wraps and dividers grease-resistant paper is enough. We’ll advise based on what you’re packing.
Do you also make bags and boxes in the same style?
Yes — parchment wraps, paper bags and boxes in one consistent identity are a frequent choice for venues.
What is the minimum run?
500 pieces — enough to introduce your own parchment with a logo without large quantities to start with.
